Ozonotherapy

What Is Ozonotherapy?

Ten Pass Room - Ozone TherapyOzonotherapy is the use of medical-grade ozone, a highly reactive form of pure oxygen, to create a curative response in the body. It was introduced in the United States in the early 1980s and has been increasingly used in recent decades. Studies and published papers have demonstrated the various benefits of ozone, including:

  • Activating the immune system in infectious diseases
  • Improving oxygen utilization to reduce ischemia in cardiovascular disease
  • Causing the release of growth factors in degenerative joint disease
  • Dramatically reducing and even eliminating many cases of chronic pain through its action on pain receptors
  • Healing effects on interstitial cystitis, chronic hepatitis, herpes infections, dental infections, diabetes, and macular degeneration

Frequently Asked Questions About Ozonotherapy

What Is Medical Grade Ozone?

When an energetic force, such as electricity or ultra-violet light, is imposed upon a molecule of O2, the two oxygen atoms are temporarily split apart into single oxygen atoms. Then, in a matter of nanoseconds, these highly unstable oxygen atoms will pair up again and reform back into an O2 molecule, but a small percentage of them will unite in a ménage-a-trois known as ozone. Thus, ozone, referred to as O3, is a molecule that consists of three oxygen atoms all sharing the same electrons. However, because of the odd number of electrons shared between three oxygen molecules, ozone is relatively unstable. This instability is why it is such a powerful biological stimulant.

How is Medical Grade Ozone generated?

Ozone is made by passing pure oxygen gas through a crystal tube through which an electrical spark is directed. The electrical energy breaks apart the oxygen molecules as described above, and what emerges from the other side is a mixture of oxygen and ozone.

How is Ozone administered to the body?

Doctors trained in the use of medical-grade ozone administer it into the blood, joints, spine, and body cavities such as the sinuses, bladder and intestines.

What conditions respond to Ozonotherapy?

Since oxygen is so fundamental to why people get sick and how the body heals itself, ozone therapy has been found to be useful for many conditions including heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, herpes, hepatitis, interstitial cystitis, diabetes, Lyme disease, chemical sensitivity, macular degeneration, intestinal and autoimmune disorders.

What is Prolozone® Therapy?

Prolozone® is a homeopathic/oxygen-ozone injection technique developed and pioneered by Frank Shallenberger, MD. It is excellent for all forms of musculoskeletal and joint pain, including chronic neck and back pain, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative and arthritic hips and knees, degenerated discs, and shoulder and elbow pain. In many cases, Prolozone corrects the pathology of the disorder. There is a 75% chance for the chronic pain sufferer to becoming permanently papain-free.

How many injections before I am pain-free?

Since oxygen is so fundamental to why people get sick and how the body heals itself, ozone therapy has been found to be useful for many conditions including heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, herpes, hepatitis, interstitial cystitis, diabetes, Lyme disease, chemical sensitivity, macular degeneration, intestinal and autoimmune disorders.

Will my insurance cover Ozonotherapy?

Ozonotherapy will not be covered under any commercial insurance or Medicare. This will be a cash-based service only.

Is Ozonotherapy Safe?

The primary mission of the American Academy of Ozonetherapy (AAO) is to provide educational and therapeutic standards for the safe and effective use of medical ozone therapy in America.  Drs. DiPiero and Hadley are members of the AAO and have passed a certification test demonstrating competency in the use of ozone therapy.

A safety study on the overall use of ozone therapy was published in 1982. The reference is below. That study found that in a group of 384,775 patients treated with various forms of ozone therapy, including a total of 5,579,238 treatment sessions, a very low complication rate of 0.006% was observed. The only major complications occurred when ozone was improperly provided by untrained practitioners. The AAO was formed to standardize and promote the safe and correct medical use of ozone therapy in the United States. Our members have taken extensive training on safe and proven protocols in ozone therapy and have passed online and clinical examinations. If these guidelines are followed, we believe the data shows that ozone therapy is one of the safest of all medical therapies.

Additionally, ozone therapy has been used throughout the world for various medical, dental, and veterinarian indications for over fifty years. There are over 2300 peer-reviewed scientific papers published on ozone therapy, and more are being published every day. These papers can be accessed on the library page of the academy's website.

The AAO is a member of The International Medical Ozone Federation (www.imeof.org) which represents twenty-one different ozone-related medical associations around the world. The IMEOF has dedicated itself to ensuring that medical practitioners around the world are properly trained to use standardized ozone protocols to provide safety and maximum efficacy. The IMEOF has published The Madrid Declaration which establishes safety and efficacy standards for ozone therapy. See the reference below.
